拍品描述
A MASSIVE (125 CM) LACQUERED WOOD ZUSHI (PORTABLE SHRINE) WITH EN NO GYOJA AND ATTENDANTS, NANBOKUCHO TO MUROMACHI PERIOD

Japan, the figures 14th-15th century, Nanbokucho (1333-1392) to early Muromachi period (1333-1573), the zushi Edo period (1615-1868)

The massive shrine enclosing En no Gyoja, holding a monk’s staff in the right hand and a ritual knife in the left. He is supported on a rugged rocky base and dressed in pleated robes beneath a cloak of leaves, wearing geta. The figure is surmounted by an elaborate metal headdress suspending tassels with glass beads. His face, with mouth slightly ajar, conveys a hypnotic intensity, with red-painted eyes set behind crystal inlays and a long flowing beard. Flanked by his two oni attendants, Zenki and Goki, both kneeling at his sides—one holding an axe, the other a long mallet. The two attendants also have painted eyes set behind crystal.

The tall shrine (zushi) with double-hinged doors, finished in black lacquer with gilt decoration and fitted with chased copper mounts.

HEIGHT 125 cm (total), 80 cm (the tallest figure)

Provenance: From a private collection in the Netherlands.
Condition: Overall good condition and presenting well. With minor wear, some flaking to the lacquer, a few areas of touchup, tiny chips to exposed areas, and insect activity to the rockwork base. The figures may have been re-lacquered. The shrine with light wear, minor warping, small nicks, and tiny chips.

The sculptures are characteristic of the Nanbokucho to early Muromachi period, distinguished by their vivid naturalism and refined carving. The expressive facial modeling, with sharply defined features and intense gazes, is complemented by striking anatomical detail, notably the veins carved in relief along the legs, emphasizing the ascetic’s physical presence.

En no Gyoja, regarded as the legendary founder of Shugendo, came to embody the archetypal mountain ascetic, revered for his austerities and spiritual powers. Although traditionally placed in the 7th–8th century, his cult gained particular prominence in the 13th and 14th centuries, when he was increasingly established as the patriarch of Shugendo and represented as a focus of devotion.

Museum comparison:
