拍品描述
A CARVED WOOD HEAD OF A RAKAN, KAMAKURA PERIOD

Japan, 14th century, Kamakura period (1185-1333)

From a yosegi-zukuri constructed figure, naturalistically carved as the head of a rakan with elongated earlobes. The face is rendered with striking intensity, its animated expression defined by pronounced musculature and deeply set features, the piercing eyes inlaid in rock crystal with gold-circled pupils beneath expressive brows.

HEIGHT 16.5 cm (excl. stand), 23.5 cm (incl. stand)

Provenance: American private collection, 2009. From an English private collection, acquired from the above.
Condition: Good condition with old wear, some insect activity to the back, tiny losses, few small apertures for mounting.

Mounted to a modern wood presentation stand.

This compelling head once formed part of a larger figure of a rakan (arhat), one of the enlightened disciples of the Buddha who attained liberation and were venerated as exemplars of spiritual discipline. In contrast to the more idealized representations of Buddhas and bodhisattvas, rakans were often depicted with individualized and expressive physiognomies, reflecting their human origins and inner realization. The present example captures this aesthetic with remarkable vitality, the intense gaze and animated features conveying both spiritual power and psychological depth. The use of inlaid crystal eyes would have enhanced the lifelike presence of the sculpture, especially within the dim interiors of temple halls.

Created during the Kamakura period (1185-1333), the work exemplifies the era’s embrace of heightened naturalism and emotional immediacy, influenced in part by contemporary Chinese Song dynasty sculpture. Comparable heads of rakans and attendant figures from this period, characterized by similarly vivid expressions and technical refinement, are preserved in major museum collections. For a related wood head of a Lokapala (Shi tenno), dated Song dynasty (960-1279), see Bonhams, Fine Chinese Art, 7 November 2019, London, lot 51 (39 cm tall, sold for GBP 68,821 or approx. EUR 104,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).

Museum comparison:
Compare a related head of a guardian, dated 13th century, 56 cm tall, in the Brooklyn Museum, accession number 86.21.
