拍品描述
A LARGE (100 CM) AND IMPRESSIVE GILT-LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF AMIDA NYORAI, MUROMACHI PERIOD

Japan, 14th-16th century, Muromachi period (1333-1573)

Of yosegi (joined) construction and finely carved seated in dhyanasana with his hands held in raigo-in, wearing a loose-fitting monastic robe draped over both shoulders, opening at the chest, and cascading in meticulously carved parallel folds, the serene face sensitively modeled with downcast eyes inlaid with inside-painted crystal, elegantly arched brows centered by a crystal-inlaid byakugo (urna), and full bow-shaped lips forming a subtle smile, flanked by pierced pendulous lobes, the hair arranged in tight curls over the ushnisha with a crystal-inlaid nikkeishu (jewel of wisdom).

Amida sits atop a circular lotus throne with meticulously beaded edge, encircled by large overlapping lotus petals raised on a furled leaf and scrolling petals, supported ona lobed waisted plinth carved with foliate reserves enclosing dharmachakra emblems, and with neatly incised gilt-metal fittings.

HEIGHT 53 cm (the figure), 100 cm (total)

Provenance: From an old French private collection.
Condition: Very good, complete condition with expected wear, light warping with associated small gaps between segments, little flaking, some rubbing and losses to lacquer, few minor chips to edges, one petal repaired, minor touchups to lacquer. Presenting beautifully.

Amida was central to the Jodo (Pure Land) sect of Buddhism propounded in 1175 by the monk Honen, with the intent of making Buddhism more readily available to all people. Salvation could be attained by the simple repetition of the name of Amida or the Nenbutsu, of which there were a number of different methods of chanting. Many statues of the Buddha of the Western Paradise were made in response to the widespread popularity of Pure Land Buddhism from the twelfth century. This image is seated with legs crossed in the lotus position with the hands in the gesture (mudra) of ‘welcoming to paradise’ (raigo-in), signaling Amida's descent from heaven to greet the soul of the faithful devotee at death.
