? SAOTOME IETSUGU: AN OKEGAWA NIMAI-DO (TWO-PIECE CUIRASS ARMOR) AND IRON SUJIBACHI KABUTO, WITH NKBKHK TOKUBETSU KICHO (ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT) SHIRYO CERTIFICATE

The kabuto by Saotome Ietsugu, signed Saotome Ietsugu
Japan, Hitachi province, 17th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

With a Tokubetsu Kicho Shiryo (Especially Important Object) certificate from the Association for the Research and Preservation of Japanese Helmets and Armor (Nihon Katchu Bugu Kenkyu Hozon Kai – NKBKHK), no. 1937, dated 5 December 2021, confirming the dating above.

The brown-lacquered-iron components predominantly laced in blue, mounted on a fine blue and gold silk brocade, and fitted with kanamono with kiku (chrysanthemum) design, as well as the Maruni chigai takanoha (hawk feather) mon, associated with the Kubo and Hidaka clans.

The armor comprises:
Kabuto (Helmet): A brown-lacquered sixty-two-plate iron bowl with raised ridges, topped by a seven-stage mixed-metal tehen kanamono, the lowest tier in the form of a stylized blossom with petals in the form of hollyhock leaves with neatly incised veins, fitted with an age’maki (decorative tassel) to the back, the mabisashi decorated with copper fukurin and below the brass maedate in the form of a pair of billing birds, the plumage neatly incised, all flanked by gently upturned fukigaeshi with copper rims with incised foliate scrolls and centered by the Maruni chigai takanoha (hawk feather) mon, associated with the Kubo and Hidaka clans, all above the lacquer four-lame jikoro. The interior of the kabuto lacquered in gilt and signed 早乙女家次 SAOTOME IETSUGU.

Menpo (Mask): A lacquered iron menpo with a removable nose plate secured by turning pins, cast with flared nostrils and an open mouth revealing gilt-lacquered teeth, the lips lacquered red, below a horse-hair mustache and above a goatee, designed with deeply embossed wrinkles, the chin with ase-nagashi, and the cheeks with bent anchoring posts, all fitted with a five-lame yodarekake.

Do (Chest Plate): A lacquered-iron nimai do with six sections of five-lame kusazuri, the lowest lame with pierced inome design to the edges, the front and the back with metal chrysanthemum-form age’maki (decorative tassel), and the latter further fitted with uke-zutsu (sashimono pole holder), all below reticulated metal plaques bearing chrysanthemum bosses against scrolling vines to the upper edge of the do. The do additionally applied with a silk brocade pouch to one side.

Sode (Shoulder Guard): A pair of six-lame sode laced with blue and orange cords and applied with chrysanthemum-form age’maki, all below reticulated plaques bearing chrysanthemum bosses against scrolling vines to the top.

Haidate (Thigh Guard): A pair of haidate on rich silk brocade.

Kote (Armored Sleeves) and Tekko (Gauntlets): A pair of iron and kusari (chain mail) kote and tekko.

Suneate (Shin Guards): A pair of iron and kusari (chain mail) suneate.

Condition: Very good condition with wear and soiling. The lacquer with flaking and expected age cracks, and the maedate with surface corrosion.

With an armor stand and a pair of black-lacquered wood storage boxes (yoroibako) decorated in gold hiramaki-e with Maruni chigai takanoha crests.

The takanoha crest, depicting the feathers of hawks, symbolizes heightened awareness and martial prowess. It illustrates the vigilance and the swift decisiveness required of samurai. This crest was popular among warrior families, emphasizing the skills and the spiritual readiness expected of them. The feathers, arranged meticulously, reflect a life led with strategic precision and sharp intellect.
