? AN OKEGAWA NIMAI-DO GUSOKU (TWO-PIECE CUIRASS ARMOR) AND AN IRON MOMONARI KABUTO

Japan, 17th-18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The lacquered-iron components predominantly laced in blue, mounted on fine blue silk brocade, and fitted with kanamono with cherry blossom (sakura) design, as well as the Maruni-Ken Katabami mon, associated with the Katabami clan.

The armor comprises:
Kabuto (Helmet): A lacquered helmet shaped like a peach with a prominent central ridge, the tosei mabisashi (concave peak) applied with a gilt-wood maedate in the form of a large sun emblem, flanked by gently upturned stylized fukigaeshi applied with silver Maruni-Ken Katabami (wood-sorrel) mon, associated with the Katabami clan, all above the five-lame jikoro.

Menpo (Mask): An iron menpo with a removable nose plate secured by turning pins, cast with flared nostrils and an open mouth, designed with deeply embossed wrinkles, the chin with ase-nagashi, and the cheeks with bent anchoring posts, all fitted with a four-lame yodarekake.

Do (Chest Plate): A lacquered-iron nimai do with six sections of five-lame kusazuri and the back further fitted with uke-zutsu (sashimono pole holder).

Sode (Shoulder Guard): A pair of four-lame sode laced with blue, orange, and white cords and applied with sakura-form age’maki (decorative tassel).

Haidate (Thigh Guard): A pair of iron and kusari (chain mail) haidate applied with stylized foliate blossoms to the lower edge.

Kote (Armored Sleeves) and Tekko (Gauntlets): A pair of iron and kusari (chain mail) kote and tekko.

Suneate (Shin Guards): A pair of iron and kusari (chain mail) suneate.

Condition: Good condition with wear, soiling, and corrosion. The lacquer with age cracks, small losses, and flaking. The fukegashi with repairs and associated touchups. The kabuto with several surface scratches. The maedate with chips and rubbing to gilt.

With an armor stand and wood storage box (yoroibako) with a fitted leather cover decorated with a gilt Maruni-Ken Katabami mon.
