MYOCHIN: AN IMPRESSIVE ICHIGUCHI-MYOCHIN SCHOOL DAIMYO YOROI (ARMOR)

The kabuto by Myochin Yoshiie, signed Myochin Yoshiie
Japan, 17th-18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The lacquered iron components predominantly laced in beige, mounted on a fine blue and gold brocade, and fitted with intricate gilt-metal kanamono with kiku (chrysanthemum) design, the imperial symbol of Japan, as well as the Hanabishi mon, associated with the Takeda clan.

The armor comprises:
Kabuto (Helmet): A russet-iron sixty-two plate koboshi kabuto with a six-tiered chrysanthemum-form tehen kanamono, the mabisashi with gilded copper rims (so-fukurin) neatly decorated with foliate scrolls, and fitted with a stylized gilt-wood nichirin (sun) maedate, flanked by upturned fukigaeshi applied with printed leather and centered by gilt-metal Hanabishi mon, associated with the Takeda clan, all above the five-lame jikoro. The brim of the helmet with four sakura (cherry-blossom) embosses. The underside of the kabuto signed MYOCHIN YOSHIIE.

Menpo (Mask): An iron menpo with a removable nose plate secured by turning pins, cast with flared nostrils and an open mouth revealing gold-lacquered teeth, below a horse-hair mustache and above a goatee, designed with deeply embossed wrinkles, the chin with ase-nagashi, and the cheeks with bent anchoring posts, all fitted with a four-lame yodarekake.

Do (Chest Plate): A gomai-do (five piece) style cuirass, decorated to the center with the character 武 in gilt takamaki-e, with seven sections of five-lame iron kusazuri, the front and the back with one large agemaki-no-kan, and the latter further fitted with uke-zutsu (sashimono pole holder). The sashimono in the form of a pole terminating in two horn-like ends.

Sode (Shoulder Guard): A pair of five-lame sode.

Haidate (Thigh Guard): A pair of iron and kusari (chain mail) haidate.

Kote (Armored Sleeves) and Tekko (Gauntlets): A pair of iron and kusari (chain mail) kote and tekko, the latter adorned with sakura blossoms and gilt Hanabishi mon.

Suneate (Shin Guards): A pair of iron suneate with Hanabishi crests to the joints.

Kegutsu (Shoes): A pair of fur shoes.

Condition: Very good condition with old wear, soiling, and corrosion. The lacquer with age cracks, small losses, and flaking. The maedate with expected wear and rubbing to gilding.

With an armor stand and wood storage box (yoroibako) with the character 前 mae [to advance] in gold paint on one side, the other with Maruni chigai takanoha mon.
