AN IMPRESSIVE BUDDHIST SCROLL PAINTING DEPICTING THE SHAKA TRIAD WITH THE SIXTEEN RAKAN, KAMAKURA PERIOD

Japan, 13th-14th century, Kamakura period (1185-1333)

Ink, gouache, and gold paint on silk. Mounted on silk brocade as a hanging scroll with foliate chased jikusaki (roller ends) and mounts. Depicting the Historical Buddha seated at the center upon a high throne in kekka fuza (dhyanasana), with his right hand raised in semui-in (abhaya mudra), while the left rests upon his lap. Shaka Nyorai attired in loose-fitting robes that leave part of the chest exposed, as he bears a serene expression and is encircled by a double kohai (nimbus). Shakyamuni is flanked by attendant bodhisattvas: to his left, Monju Bosatsu, mounted on an elephant, and to his right, Fugen Bosatsu, riding a lion, symbolizing, respectively, wisdom and practice within the Buddhist tradition. Surrounding the central triad appears a group of sixteen rakan, enlightened disciples of the Buddha, arranged with eight on each side, attentively receiving his teaching. They are accompanied by youthful attendants, while a tiger moves among them and a dragon soars above the scene.

SIZE of the painting 100.5 x 57.3 cm, SIZE incl. mounting 173.8 x 77.3 cm

Provenance: From a private collection in Switzerland.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Little soiling, scattered stains, and flaking to pigment. Small tears along horizontal fold lines and creases. The frame with signs of wear, creasing and occasional soiling.

The present work exemplifies the significant impact of Chinese Buddhist painting of the Song dynasty (960–1279) on medieval Japanese Buddhist visual culture. The anonymous artist who executed it appears to have closely followed a model imported from China, reflecting both stylistic and compositional conventions of the Chinese prototype.
