拍品描述
A LARGE AND RARE BUDDHIST MANDARA OF THE BUDDHAS EMBODYING THE CAPACITIES OF THE VICTORIOUS USHNISHA (SONSHO MANDARA), MUROMACHI PERIOD

Japan, 16th century, late Muromachi period (1333-1573)

Ink, watercolors, and gold paint on fabric, mounted as a hanging scroll with ivory jikusaki (roller ends).

This remarkable cosmic diagram, used in meditation, depicts nine primary deities arranged within a luminous white disk, resembling a full moon suspended against a dark, cosmic backdrop. The central figure is Dainichi Nyorai (Mahāvairocana), the embodiment of universal truth. He is portrayed seated upon a lotus platform, supported by seven lion-dogs, each holding a vajra in their mouth, symbolizing the indestructible nature of the Buddhist law. Dainichi, shown slightly larger than the surrounding deities to emphasize his supreme status, makes a hand gesture signifying wisdom and wears a crown adorned with the five wisdom Buddhas.

Encircling Dainichi are the Eight Deities of the Buddha’s Crown (Ushnisha Buddhas). At the lower left, Fudo Myoo appears within a white triangle, a symbol of wisdom. In his right hand, he holds a sword to cut through delusions, while his left hand wields a lasso to reign in those who obstruct the path to enlightenment. At the lower right, Gozanze Myoo, with three faces and eight arms, tramples two figures, symbolizing the destruction of evil. Above, celestial beings (Shudaeten) gracefully soar on clouds in the upper section of the mandara.
