拍品描述
? A FINE LACQUERED WOOD KURA (SADDLE) AND A PAIR OF SILVER-INLAID IRON ABUMI (STIRRUPS)

Japan, 17th-18th century (the saddle dated 1680), Edo period (1615-1868)

The saddle, of gunjin-gura (campaign saddle) type, fitted with two lacquered igi (wood side boards), maewa (pommel) and shizuwa (cantle), the pommel with the umi (‘sea’) and iso (‘shore’) registers almost evenly proportioned. The sides are carved with low-shouldered tegata (hand-shaped) indentations, all bearing a dense nashiji ground. The pommel is decorated with an open folding fan enclosing a family crest in two shades of gold takamaki-e. A pair of copper-alloy fittings is attached to both pommel and cantle with twine and leather cords. With a saddle pad and stirrup leathers.

Accompanied by a pair of russet-iron abumi of typical form, the exteriors intricately inlaid in silver to depict cherry blossoms and waves. The buckles at the top are similarly decorated, with movable tangs.

Inscriptions: Engraved to the first igi Enpo hachi nen (1680), the second igi signed with a kakihan (artist’s cursive monogram).

LENGTH 36.5 cm (the abumi), LENGTH 40.3 cm (the kura)

Condition: The abumi in good condition with old wear. Few nicks and obvious losses to the inlays. The kura with extensive wear, expected age cracks, and losses to lacquer.

Kura (saddles) and abumi (stirrups) formed essential components of Japanese equestrian equipment from as early as the 5th century, evolving into highly specialized and often richly decorated elements of samurai accoutrement during the Edo period. The gunjin-gura was designed for mounted warfare, providing stability and balance, while the distinctive open-sided abumi, with their elongated footrests and upturned fronts, ensured secure footing for the rider in combat. Beyond their practical function, both saddle and stirrups became important vehicles for artistic expression, often embellished with lacquer, metalwork, and inlay reflecting the status and taste of their owner. The present ensemble, combining finely lacquered wood with silver-inlaid iron, exemplifies this union of function, craftsmanship, and aesthetic refinement characteristic of samurai horse gear.
