拍品描述
NAKAJIMA RAISHO: AN EXCEPTIONAL PAIR OF SIX-PANEL ‘SUN AND MOON’ BYOBU (FOLDING SCREENS)

By Nakajima Raisho (1796-1871), signed Raisho and sealed Shin Raisho no in Shikei uji
Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Ink, silver and gold paint on paper. Each mounted on six wood panels. The pair presents a refined and atmospheric depiction of the sun and moon. One screen is exquisitely painted with a radiant golden sun emerging through a field of softly drifting clouds, rendered using a delicate sprinkling technique that creates a subtle sense of depth and movement. The companion screen mirrors this composition with a full moon set amid similarly treated clouds, establishing a harmonious balance between the two. The celestial discs are executed in gold and silver leaf respectively, their luminous surfaces contrasting elegantly with the finely modulated cloud forms.

Inscriptions: Each screen signed Raisho, 来章 and sealed Shin Raisho no in Shikei uji [Raisho, descendant of the Shikei family].

Renowned for his mastery of the Shijo style, Raisho excelled in the delicate art of kacho-ga, depicting birds and flowers with exquisite realism. His captivating works are showcased in prestigious collections worldwide, including the British Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art.
