拍品描述
MORI SOSEN: AN IMPRESSIVE AND VERY FINE PAIR OF SIX-PANEL ‘MONKEYS’ BYOBU (FOLDING SCREENS)

By Mori Sosen (1747-1821), signed Sosen with seal Morikata
Japan, late 18th-early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Ink, watercolors, gouache, and gold paint on paper. Mounted on silk brocade and set within six lacquered wood panels with finely chased and ring-punched brass fittings incised with karakusa. The pair presents complementary scenes of macaque monkeys in seasonal settings. One screen depicts monkeys animatedly moving among the branches of a pine tree, while the other shows monkeys climbing a flowering cherry tree. The animals are rendered with remarkable vitality, their postures lively and varied, and their fur described with soft, naturalistic brushwork.

Inscriptions: One signed to the lower right, the other to the lower left, Sosen (狙仙), each with a red seal Morikata (守象), the artist’s given name.

SIZE 178 x 364 cm (each)

Provenance: Koller, Asiatica, 30 September 2008, Zurich, lot 490 (mid-estimate CHF 25,000 or approx. EUR 28,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, little soiling, few stains, and minor rubbing to pigments. The frame with traces of wear and use.

Mori Sosen (1747-1821), founder of the Mori painting school and active in Osaka, is celebrated as the foremost painter of monkeys in Japanese art, earning the sobriquet “Monkey Painter Sosen.” Like his contemporary Maruyama Okyo, he worked from direct observation, producing studies of remarkable immediacy and realism. This approach is clearly evident in the present screens, where the nuanced rendering of fur and expressive movement of the animals exemplify his mastery.

Auction comparison:
Compare a closely related six-panel screen of monkeys atop trees, after Mori Sosen, dated to the 19th century, 173 cm high, at Christie’s, The House Sale, 5 April 2006, New York, lot 438 (sold for USD 28,800 or approx. EUR 40,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). Compare a closely related large hanging scroll of monkeys, by Mori Sosen and also bearing the seal Morikata, at Zacke, Fine Japanese Art, 4 June 2021, Vienna, lot 265 (sold for EUR 15,168).
