拍品描述
A FINE PAIR OF SIX-PANEL BYOBU (FOLDING SCREENS) DEPICTING A HUNTING SCENE ON THE PLAIN OF MOUNT FUJI

Japan, late 17th-18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Ink, watercolors, gouache, and gold foil on paper. Each mounted within a silk brocade frame on six lacquered wood panels with gilt-metal fittings incised with foliate scrolls. Finely painted with a mountainous landscape depicting several wild boars, rabbits, and deer being pursued by determined hunting party, few on horseback while others on foot, holding bows and arrows, halberds (naginata), and large swords; a view of the tall peak of Mount Fuji to the back.

SIZE 175 x 367 cm (each)

Inscriptions: The wood tomobako inscribed 遠藤氏、大正拾五年四月求 Endo shi, Taisho jugo-nen shigatsu motome [This is acquired by The Endo Family, in the fourth month of the Taisho 15 (1926)]

Provenance: The private collection of the Endo Family, acquired in 1926 (according to the tomobako).
Condition: Good condition with wear and good colors. Some soiling, few stains, and flaking to pigment. Small losses with associated repairs and touchups. Expected flaking to gold foil. The back with signs of wear and use.

With an inscribed wood storage box that holds both screens.

The present pair of screens depicting a hunting scene before Mount Fuji likely references Minamoto no Yoritomo (1147-1199), the founder and first shogun of the Kamakura shogunate in Japan. In May 1193 he hosted a boar hunting party near Mount Fuji, where a giant boar charged at him which Nitta no Shiro (also known as Tadatsune) bravely slayed, saving Yoritomo.
