Expert Authentication: Takatoshi Misugi examined the present lot and confirmed its authenticity and the dating above. A copy of Misugi's signed and sealed expertise accompanies this lot. Takatoshi Misugi was a Japanese scholar and a recognized authority on Chinese porcelain and the history of ceramic trade. His research focused on Chinese export ceramics and their circulation across Asia and the Islamic world through historical maritime trade networks. Misugi is credited with helping to popularize the concept of the Maritime Silk Road in the mid-twentieth century, emphasizing the role of sea routes in the international distribution of Chinese porcelain. He is best known for his study Chinese Porcelain Collections in the Near East: Topkapi and Ardebil (1981), an important examination of Chinese ceramics preserved in the Ottoman and Persian imperial collections. Through his work, Misugi contributed significantly to the understanding of the global reach and cultural impact of Chinese porcelain.China, Hebei province. Delicately potted with deep rounded sides rising from a short straight foot to an everted rim, the exterior sides and the rim divided into six lobes, freely carved to the interior with a day lily borne on a winding foliate stem. Covered overall with a transparent creamy-white glaze. The rim fitted with a gilt copper alloy ring.Provenance: A private collection in Japan. A private collection in France, acquired from the above. Christie's Paris, 10 June 2025, lot 22, mid-estimate EUR 10,000. A cardboard leaflet inscribed in Japanese, 'Northern Song Ding ware floral bowl', accompanies this lot. Condition: Very good condition with expected wear and firing irregularities including dark spots and glaze pooling, the foot rim with a tiny hairline and few small smoothened chips.Weight: 375 g Dimensions: Diameter 22 cmWith a Japanese wood storage box. (2)It was a common practice of the potters at the Ding kilns in Hebei province to fire their bowls and dishes upside down in order to prevent warping of the thin walls. This method necessitated that the rims be wiped clean of glaze to avoid adhesion to the kiln structure. After firing, the unglazed rims were then bound with gold, silver, or gilt copper alloy. Not only did such metal bands conceal the unglazed rims, they also aided in the prevention of chipping of these expensive and luxurious wares.Literature comparison: The present bowl is finely carved with freely executed daylily motifs, a design known on a number of Ding ware vessels. Compare a larger basin in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Catalogue of the Special Exhibition of Ting Ware White Porcelain, Taipei, 1987, no. 28; a conical bowl from the Linyushanren Collection, included in The Classic Age of Chinese Ceramics: An Exhibition of Song Treasures from the Linyushanren Collection, Hong Kong, 2012, no. 1; and a larger basin from the same collection, ibid., no. 9.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby's Hong Kong, 9 April 2024, lot 44 Price: HKD 698,500 or approx.
