拍品描述
China, 960-1234. Delicately potted with shallow flaring sides supported on a short foot, the interior fluidly carved with a leafy lotus spray, encircled by six lines radiating outwards towards the notched rim, covered overall with a glaze of creamy cream-white tone save for the rim.Provenance: Collection of Nicholas Wood, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. A private collection in the United Kingdom, acquired from the above.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities, including glaze recesses, a semi-circular spur mark with kiln encrustation to the base, and dark spots. With light surface scratches.Weight: 115 g Dimensions: Diameter 14.1 cmDing wares were made in Hebei province and belong to the earliest true porcelains made in China, and the world. The wares were often fired sitting upside down like the present lot, with their weight resting on their rim. This strategy served to spread the weight of the object and to guard against any malformation of their thinly potted bodies during the firing. Because of contact between the rim and the ground of the saggar, the rims were often left unglazed, and many were later covered with metal fittings.Literature comparison: Two Ding ware examples incised with central lotus medallions were exhibited at the Nezu Institute of Fine Arts, Tokyo, and illustrated in the exhibition catalogue, White Porcelain of Ding Yao, Tokyo, 1983, cat. nos. 130 and 131; and another example from the Heeramaneck Collection is illustrated in Jan Wirgin, Sung Ceramic Designs, Stockholm, 1970, pl. 58c. A similar example, dated to the Jin period, was included in the exhibition The Decorated Porcelains of Dingzhou: White Ding wares from the collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 2014, II-38, p. 83.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Bonhams New York, 18 March 2019, lot 535 Price: USD 37,575 or approx.
