拍品描述
Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Oxford Authentication on 25 February 2026, based on sample number P126b79, sets the firing date of the sample taken between 750 and 1100 years ago, consistent with the dating above. A copy of the report accompanies this lot.China, 960-1279. Well potted with a pear-shaped body supported on a slightly spreading foot and rising to a slender waisted neck with flared rim, richly decorated with a wide band of swaying lotus flowers and leaves framed by geometric borders above a band of chrysanthemum petals encircling the foot. Covered overall with a finely crackled, pale bluish-white glaze extending to the interior and stopping above the foot, revealing the buff ware burnt to orange in the firing.Provenance: Collection of George Dunsmuir, Esq., Scotland, and thence by descent. Duke's, Dorchester, 18 November 2016, lot 36 (dated “probably Song dynasty”). A private collection in Dorset, United Kingdom, acquired from the above and thence by descent. George Dunsmuir was a Director of Dunsmuir & Jackson Engineers and Boilermakers, proprietors of the Govan Engine Works, which occupied a three acre site in Govan and employed more than five hundred people.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities including dark spots, small glaze recesses, little pitting, and a luting line at the neck. The foot with a minute nick. The base with a small hole from sample-taking, now filled.Weight: 555 g Dimensions: Height 25 cmStarting from the early Northern Song dynasty, kilns at Jingdezhen achieved success in producing very fine white-bodied porcelain covered with an illuminous glaze of icy blue tinge, earning the name qingbai, 'blue white', or yingqing, 'shadow blue'. The exquisite quality of qingbai porcelain was widely recognized and remained an important ceramic tradition through the Southern Song and into the Yuan dynasty.Literature comparison:Compare a related vase of similar form and lotus design, dated to the Yuan dynasty, in the Dayton Art Institute, object number 1942.160. Note the arguably less sharp decoration and later date.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's Hong Kong, 5 December 2023, lot 3226 Mid-Estimate: HKD 70,000 or approx.
