拍品描述
Heavily cast, the figure seated in a relaxed pose, the hands resting on the bent knees and holding the lemon-fruit in his right hand while his left is clasped around the jewel-spewing mongoose's neck. Scantily clad only in turquoise and coral inlaid jewelry, the pot-bellied deity's genitalia visible from the underside. The face with a serene expression, silver-inlaid almond shaped eyes, a straight nose, and bow-shaped lips forming a gentle smile. The neatly incised hair pulled away from the face, a few stray locks falling to the shoulder, and small ringlets framing the face, crowned with a beaded tiara topped by a large foliate medallion inlaid with coral to the center.Provenance: UK Trade. Acquired from an estate in southern England. Condition: Very good condition with some old wear and expected casting irregularities. Scattered nicks and scratches. The inlays with touchups, some possibly repaired. A small touchup to one silver-inlaid eye.Weight: 1,446.3 kg Dimensions: Height 15 cmThe present rotund figure depicts the Buddhist wealth deity, Jambhala. Often confused with the Hindu god Kubera or the Buddhist Guardian King, Vaishravana, Jambhala's unusual appearance descends from ancient Indian yaksha figures. In visual iconography, the Hindu god Kubera, also a wealth deity, and Jambhala are essentially identical, while Vaishravana can be easily distinguished by the presence of armor, among other things. In many representations of Kubera, Vaishravana, and Jambhala, including in the present lot, the mongoose that the deity clutches spews jewels, exemplifying the wealth-granting powers of all three deities. According to Jeff Watt in Kubera- I am not Kubera!, 'This single attribute of the mongoose in the left hand is often reason enough to misidentify any figure, sculpture or painting, as Kubera, if it is the only characteristic which is looked for in basing an identification.'Literature comparison:Compare a closely related figure of Jambhala, illustrated by Jeff Watt on Himalayan Art Resources, item number 58589. Compare a closely related figure of Jambhala in the Museum der Kulturen, Basel, illustrated by Jeff Watt on Himalayan Art Resources, item number 3314896.
