拍品描述
TIBETAN-CHINESE, SECOND HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURYSeparately cast, Avalokiteshvara stands in samabhanga on a beaded double-lotus pedestal, itself raised on a tiered base with a recessed plinth enclosing dragons within lobed panels. The deity is clad in voluminous robes falling in soft, rhythmic folds, the long sashes curling outward in animated loops. Richly adorned with beaded foliate jewelry, the figure is surmounted by eleven crowned heads arranged in tiers, while forty-two radiating hands extend and form a circle, each palm neatly painted and incised with a watchful eye.The principal hands are held in anjali mudra, gently clasping a fruit. Of the secondary arms, five hold a vajra and ghanta, a mala, a lotus bud, a strung bow and arrow, and a bumpa (ritual vase), while the sixth is lowered in varada mudra, the gesture of generosity. Each of the eleven faces is finely detailed with neatly painted eyes and softly defined red lips.Provenance: From a private collection in Zagreb, Croatia. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and casting irregularities, little warping, minuscule nicks, small surface scratches, minimal losses to gilt and pigmentsWeight: 28.3 kg Dimensions: Height 103 cmThe large sculpture depicts Avalokiteshvara Sahasrabhuja Ekadasamukha - the All Seeing, All Sided Lord with One Thousand Hands and Eleven Faces, who looks in every direction to save all creatures. Since the first Dharma King of the Yarlung Dynasty, Songtsen Gampo (604-50), Avalokiteshvara has been the primary tutelary deity of Tibet, incarnating spiritual and political rule. Here he appears in his supreme cosmic form expressing his infinite capacity with a multitude of heads and arms. The iconography follows either the Palmo or Jowo traditions of depicting the deity with benign expressions except for the penultimate wrathful head. Despite the popularity and central status of Avalokitesvara, very few examples in the form of Sahasrabhujalokeshvara Ekadasamukha are extant.Literature comparison:Compare a related, earlier, smaller gilt-copper figure of the Eleven-Headed Avalokiteshvara (Ekadasha-Lokeshvara), dated c. 1750, 54.6 cm high, in the Birmingham Museum of Art.
