拍品描述
Tibetan-Chinese. Finely modelled and sumptuously lacquered, the figure seated in dhyanasana upon a double lotus pedestal with a beaded rim. The hands rest in dhyana mudra, lowered gracefully in the lap and supporting a vessel of ambrosia. The deity attired in a long dhoti, its generous pleats gracefully gathering around the legs, while the body is richly adorned with jewelry, and a flowing shawl winds sinuously along the arms. The face, serene in expression, characterized by downcast eyes beneath gently arched brows, centered by a small urna, a broad nose, and full lips forming a subtle smile, all flanked by large, pendant earrings. The hair arranged in a tall chignon, secured by an elaborate tiara. The underside lacquered in red.Provenance: Collection of S. van der Velden, Delft, Netherlands, and thence by descent. The underside affixed with an old label inscribed 'Tibet. Culte lama?que: Tze-Pag-Med (en sanskrit, Amitayus). Vie éternelle. Forme d'Amitabha. Cette divinité tient le vase d'ambroisie et est très vénérée au Tibet'. (Translated: “Tibet. Lamaist cult: Tze-Pag-Med (in Sanskrit, Amitayus). Eternal life. A form of Amitabha. This deity holds the vase of ambrosia and is highly venerated in Tibet.”)Condition: Old wear, few small losses, crackling and flaking to lacquer, minor chips, minute nicks, the neck with an old repair.Weight: 569.3 gDimensions: Height 14.8 cmAmitayus, a form of the Buddha Amitabha in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism, is associated with longevity, wisdom, and immortality. He is typically depicted wearing an ornate crown and holding a vase of Amrita, the nectar of immortality. In Tibetan and Nepalese Buddhist art, Amitayus plays a central role in longevity rituals, revered for overcoming karmic obstacles. His image is widely represented in sculptures and temple decorations, symbolizing enlightenment and the aspiration for a long, spiritually fulfilled life.Such votive stelae dedicated to Amitayus were produced in high quantities during the Qing dynasty, particularly under the reign of the Qianlong Emperor, when imperial patronage fostered the widespread dissemination of Tibetan Buddhist imagery. In contrast to the substantial corpus of examples made in terracotta and bronze, few works modeled in clay have survived. These figures, commonly referred to as 'tsa tsa', were occasionally further embellished with gilding, as in the present lot.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related gilt-lacquer clay figure of Buddha Amitayus, Tibet, Qing dynasty, Qianlong period, in the Linden Museum, Stuttgart. Compare a closely related gilt-lacquer clay figure of Buddha Amitayus, Tibet, 19th century, in the St.-Annen-Museum, Lübeck.
