拍品描述
Expert's note: It is rather rare to encounter a Han dynasty bronze hu of such fine quality still retaining its original cover, as lids were frequently separated in antiquity due to ritual reuse, damage, or later burial disturbance. Over centuries, many covers were lost, replaced, or mismatched, particularly as vessels entered the art market detached from archaeological context. The survival of a well-fitting, period cover therefore significantly enhances the scholarly importance of the piece.China, 475-221 BC. Finely cast, the pear-shaped body rising from a flat base to a subtly waisted neck terminating in a broad circular mouth, surmounted by a slightly domed cover adorned with three finials. The exterior cast in relief with a band of taotie masks and scroll motifs in high relief, above two loops suspending loose rings. (2)Provenance: Christie's South Kensington, 10 April 1997, lot 147. An important Belgian private collection, acquired from the above and thence by family descent. The important Belgian private collection belonged to a professor at the University of Louvain and a chartered accountant, who travelled across all continents and consistently sought, alongside his professional activities, the intellectual pleasure of discovery. He began assembling his predominantly archaeological collection in the late 1950s and continued to enrich it over seven decades through the cultures he encountered until the end of his life, in October 2024. The earliest objects he acquired, in the late 1950s, were Paleolithic and Neolithic tools. His interests expanded to include Mediterranean and Pre-Columbian civilizations during the 1960s, and from the 1970s onward his focus gradually shifted toward East Asia. His collection was distinguished by exceptional professional rigor in its classification and documentation.Condition: Good condition with expected wear and casting irregularities, signs of prolonged burial, encrustations, corrosion, minor warping and light dents, small nicks and surface scratches. The bronze with a rich, naturally grown patina with vibrant malachite encrustation.Weight: 1,866 gDimensions: Height 29.6 cm'Hu' ritual vessels such as the present lot were used, according to the 'Rites of Zhou' (Zhou Li), as wine containers during the performance of sacrificial ceremonies in Bronze Age China.
