拍品描述
A GOLD AND SILVER-INLAID BRONZE BELT HOOK, DAIGOU, WARRING STATES PERIOD-WESTERN HAN DYNASTYChina, 4th-1st century BC. Masterfully cast, the slender, gently curved shaft is intricately inlaid with gold and silver sheet and wire, forming tight spirals and a range of geometric motifs, all carefully framed by bands of varying angle and width. The upper end culminates in a finely modeled hook shaped as a dragon head, crisply defined and alert in expression. The reverse is set with a circular button, completing the balanced and functional design. Provenance: German trade. Acquired from an old private estate in Berlin, Germany. Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age, showing expected wear and minor casting irregularities. Traces of prolonged burial remain visible in the form of encrustations and localized corrosion, alongside small losses to the inlays, light dings, and minute surface scratches. The button displays an old repair and minor fissures. The bronze is covered in a rich, naturally developed patina of deep copper-red tone, accentuated by vivid malachite encrustations. Weight: 110.4 g (excl. stand), 168.7 g (incl. stand) Dimensions: Height 11.3 cm (excl. stand), 13.2 cm (incl. stand) With an associated metal stand. (2) The adoption of cavalry?and the dress style of the nomadic tribes prompted in China the creation of many accessories closely related to the new outfit, such as belt hooks and buckles, fittings for iron swords, horse trappings, and archery-related accessories. Besides their utilitarian function, these accessories also communicated the high status of their owners.? Literature comparison: Compare a closely related gold- and silver-inlaid bronze garment hook, daigou, in the form of a Chinese lute with animals and scrolls, Eastern Zhou dynasty, 3rd century BC, 8.5 cm high, in the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art, accession number S2012.9.1740. Compare a related silver-inlaid bronze garment hook, daigou, Eastern Zhou dynasty, 3rd century BC, 13.9 cm high, in the Musée Cernuschi, inventory number M.C. 9121. Compare related bronze garment hooks excavated from the Ta'erzhuang Qin Tomb and illustrated in Chengyang City Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology (ed.), The Ta'erpo Qin Tombs, 1994, p. 141, no. 3, and p. 142, no. 1.
