A RARE BRONZE KNIFE, ORDOS CULTURE, 2ND CENTURY BCNorthern China and Inner Mongolia. The knife is formed with a slender, flat blade of gently sweeping profile, beveled along one edge and tapering to a curved point. It extends seamlessly into a narrow shaft, decorated with diagonal double-lined bands enclosing rows of raised dots. The handle terminates in a semicircular pommel with openwork ornament, lending the piece both lightness and a refined graphic finish. Provenance: Beurdeley & Cie, Paris, 1995. A copy of the stamped and signed invoice from Beurdeley, dated 2 December 1995 and confirming the dating above, accompanies the lot. Galerie Beurdeley was established in 1817 by Jean Beurdeley (1771-1853) as a shop selling curiosities and rose to prominence under his grandson Alfred-Emmanuel-Louis Beurdeley (1847-1919) as the most important Chinese art gallery in Paris. After World War II, the gallery was run by Michel Beurdeley (1911-2012). In the early 1970s, his son Jean-Michel Beurdeley took over operations of the gallery for the next three decades before eventually moving to Thailand in 2001. Jean-Michel is a co-founder of MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum in Chiang Mai and sponsor of the Patsri Bunnag Foundation. He was honored with the French title Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2007 and promoted to Officier in 2018. Condition: Good condition with expected wear and casting irregularities, minor nibbles and small chips along the blade edge, small fissures, light warping. Few minute nicks and shallow surface scratches. The bronze surface with a fine, naturally grown patina with areas of malachite encrustation.
