拍品描述
Expert's note: Luohans (Arhats), the enlightened disciples of the Buddha, are most commonly portrayed in Chinese Buddhist art as aged ascetics, their wrinkled faces and gaunt features emphasizing wisdom gained through long years of spiritual practice. In rarer instances, however, artists depicted luohans with youthful features, as in the present portrayal, highlighting the idea that enlightenment transcends age and worldly experience.Such youthful representations appear occasionally from the Tang dynasty onward, where the calm, smooth face conveys spiritual attainment through inner realization rather than physical age.Luohan figures became increasingly popular from the Song dynasty. Li Song in From the Northern Song to the Qing, Chinese Sculpture, New Haven, 2006, p. 389, notes that during this period various Buddhist schools sought to trace their religious lineages directly back to Shakyamuni. As the Buddha's immediate disciples, the luohans thus became key figures linking Chinese Buddhism to its Indian origins. This growing emphasis on lineage encouraged Song dynasty artists to depict the luohans as distinct individuals, resulting in the strongly differentiated physiognomies characteristic of Song and later sculpture.Earlier representations from the Tang dynasty, such as the present lot, are far rarer and generally more restrained, presenting the luohan in a calmer, more idealized manner before the later emphasis on individualized identity took hold.China. Finely modeled, the expressive and almost jovial face of an enlightened follower of the Buddha vividly rendered with heavy-lidded eyes and painted pupils, full lips stained red forming a benevolent smile, flanked by long, pendulous earlobes.Provenance: Weisbrod Chinese Art, New York, United States, acquired circa in the 1990s and held until 2007. Although they attained Buddhahood during the course of their lives, they delayed entering Nirvana and remained on earth to protect the Buddhist dharma and to aid others in seeking enlightenment according to the instruction of the Buddha. Invested with extraordinary spiritual power, they are believed to possess perfect wisdom and insight into all existence while being freed from the bonds of desires.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Bonhams London, 7 November 2019, lot 48Price: GBP 12,562 or approx.
