拍品描述
China, 7th century. Sensitively cast standing on a hollow double-lotus base raised on an octagonal tiered plinth, wearing an elaborate long trailing scarf and a dhoti tied with a sash. The slender body, held in an erect yet graceful pose, exemplifies the essence of Sui sculptural style, and bears only the slightest hint of the more sensuous forms to follow in the Tang dynasty in the subtle hip movement.Provenance: From an old Swedish private collection, acquired in the 1950s. Sotheby's London, 7 November 2025, lot 824, mid-estimate of GBP 14,000 or approximately EUR 17,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing.Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Old wear and casting irregularities, tiny nicks, small dents, rubbing and minor losses to gilt, obvious losses. The bronze with a fine, naturally grown, smooth patina overall. The facial features are particularly well preserved, which is rather rare for this typeWeight: 40 g Dimensions: Height 7 cmExpert's note: While the identity of the present figure remains uncertain due to the absence of defining attributes, it nonetheless bears a close resemblance to a number of figures identified as the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara (Guanyin), who was a frequent subject of personal devotional imagery during the period. Representations of Avalokitesvara during the Sui and Tang periods frequently depict the bodhisattva adorned in princely jewels and a crown, bearing a 'pure water vessel', believed to heal or bestow immortality upon worshipers, in one hand; and a willow branch, also representative of healing, in the other. This small and finely cast figure demonstrates the movement from the stylized volumes of the Sui dynasty towards the fully rounded fleshy form of the Tang period. The figure is notable for its early adaption of the dynamic sinuous posture, with the contrapposto thrust of the hips, and elegant proportions, which continued to develop during the Tang dynasty.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related gilt-bronze figure of Avalokitesvara, dated to the Sui-early Tang dynasty, 15.2 cm high, in the Palace Museum, object number 000123N000000000. Compare a related gilt-bronze figure of a standing Guanyin, dated to the Sui dynasty, 20 cm high, in the Tsz Shan Monastery Buddhist Art Museum, accession number 2017.49.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby's New York, 12 September 2018, lot 1 Price: USD 112,500 or approx.
