拍品描述
China, 618-907. Skillfully carved in the round, the small animal depicted in a recumbent pose, its legs tucked neatly beneath the plump body, its hindquarters subtly suggested, extending into a small, rounded tail. The oval head defined by a pair of prominent eyes and two elongated ears, symmetrically rendered and laid back along the curve of the body.Provenance: West Berkshire, United Kingdom, local trade. By repute acquired from a private estate.Condition: Fair condition with expected ancient wear, deep weathering, erosion, and minor areas of decomposition from an extended period of burial. Occasional small chips smoothed over time, a few minute nicks, and shallow surface scratches.Expert's note:The present carving accords closely with the established physiognomy of other small Tang-dynasty representations of hares. Such works typically share a similar crouching posture, with the elongated ears drawn back, the head resting upon the forepaws, and deeply set oval eyes, features that lend the animal a quiet introspection. It is notable that in ancient China only two periods consistently produced animal sculptures of such striking elegance and, in many ways, surprisingly modern appearance: the Shang and the Tang dynasties. In the Shang period, artisans working primarily in bronze developed an exceptionally refined sense of stylization, reducing animals to powerful, rhythmic forms governed by strict design principles. Over a millennium later, Tang sculptors—working in clay, stone, and ceramics—revived a similarly confident approach, combining keen observation of nature with a bold economy of line and volume. In both periods, artists balanced naturalism with abstraction, creating sculptures whose clarity of form and compositional restraint resonate strongly with contemporary aesthetic sensibilities.Weight: 473.4 gDimensions: Length 9.7 cmLiterature comparison:Compare a closely related marble carving of a crouching rabbit, Tang dynasty, 618-907, 16 cm long, in the Art Gallery of New South Wales, accession number 785-D4.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie's New York, 20 September 2013, lot 1511 Price: USD 30,000 or approx.
