A THANGKA DEPICTING SHRI DEVI, MAGZOR GYALMO, HIMALAYAN REGION, 18TH CENTURYDistemper and gold paint on cloth. Mounted on silk and set inside a frame, behind glass. (2)The wrathful protectress astride a mule with serpent reins, within a fiery halo and galloping through a roiling lake of blood, with three bloodshot eyes and a gaping mouth, holding a danda in the raised right hand and a kapala in the left. She wears a five-pointed crown, the six bone ornaments, a flayed human skin across the shoulders, a garland of severed heads, and a tiger skin around the waist. Divination dice and a bag of diseases are suspended from her belt. All set within a verdant landscape with rolling hills and scrolling clouds.Provenance: Hungarian private collection. Condition: Very good condition with wear, minimal fading to colors, creasing, and little flaking to pigment. Minute touchups are possible. The mounting with wear, soiling, water stains, and signs of wear and use.Dimensions: Image size 46 x 32.5 cm, Size incl. frame 86.5 x 49 cmAt the bottom are two attendants. To the left is the 'Makara-Faced One', blue in color with one face and two hands, holding a lasso and placed before the central figure, grasping the reins of the donkey. To the right is the 'Lion-Faced One', dark red, holding a curved knife and skullcup, following behind the mount. Both are adorned with human skins and bone ornaments. In the four corners are fierce goddesses riding animal mounts. Saraswati appears in the upper register playing the lute, while the wrathful offerings of the six senses are depicted in the lower register.Shri Devi in her current manifestation is a Tibetan form of an ancient Indian goddess. She was worshiped in pre-Buddhist Tibet to cure and suppress the spread of disease. Her practice was later absorbed by Tibetan Buddhists and she was reincorporated as a protectress of the Buddhist faith.Shri Devi is the only female amongst the dharmapala or sworn protectors of Buddhism.
