拍品描述
Distemper and gold on cloth. Mounted as a hanging scroll within a blue silk brocade frame embroidered with an Imperial Chinese five-clawed dragon. The central deity is Manjuvara, the three-headed and eight-armed tantric manifestation of Manjushri, identifiable by the flaming sword and manuscript held in his principal hands. Seated in royal ease (lalitasana) upon a lotus base, he is depicted in yab-yum union with his consort Prajnaparamita, the personification of transcendent wisdom and embodiment of the eponymous sutra. She mirrors his pose in harmonious balance, holding the stem of a blue lotus and displaying the gesture of teaching (vitarka mudra). The composition is encircled by smaller attendant manifestations of Manjuvara in union with consorts of varying colors—yellow, red, green, and blue—creating a mandorla-like arrangement that reinforces the tantric character of the image. Rich mineral pigments and extensive gilding heighten the hieratic presence of the scene.Inscriptions: To the bottom edge, inscribed with two rows of mantras.Provenance: From a private collection in Vienna, Austria.Condition: Overall in good condition with visible wear consistent with age, including areas of soiling, creasing, and fold marks. There is flaking and minor instability to the mineral pigments, as well as scattered abrasions and selective touch-ups. The gilt is well-preserved. The brocade mounting remains in very good condition, with only minor losses to the red lining on the reverse.Dimensions: Image size 59 x 40 cm, Size incl. frame 111 x 62 cmThe top register is centered by Chakrasamvara with his consort Nairatma flanked by Manjushri with consort and Hevajra with consort. The bottom register with white and green Tara flanked by devotees with their hands pressed together in reverence. The present iconography supports a more romantic interpretation of the divine couple, as Dr. Pal observes, "when Prajnaparamita holds a blue lotus, the book placed on it is the Kamasastra, the manual of physical desire rather than the lofty Paramita treatise. Curiously, Manjushri is sometimes identified specifically with Kama, god of desire" (Pal, Asian Art at the Norton Simon Museum, vol. 2, 2003, p. 96, no. 62).Auction result comparison: Type: RelatedAuction: Sotheby's Paris, 9 December 2021, lot 130 Price: EUR 7,560 or approx.
