拍品描述
AN EXTREMELY RARE THANGKA DEPICTING SHOULAO AND AMITAYUS, 18TH-19TH CENTURYTibetan-Chinese. Gold and distemper on cloth. Mounted in a traditional cloth and silk hanging. The Daoist God of Longevity seated in relaxed pose by a rocky cave beneath a fruit-laden peach tree, attired in voluminous scroll-decorated robes that fall in ample, graceful folds around his legs, with his large head distinguished by a prominent cranium, and his serene countenance framed by a long white beard, accompanied by pairs of deer and cranes. All set within a verdant landscape beneath a deep blue sky. Emerging from a cloud above appears the red-skinned Amitayus seated in dhyanasana upon a lotus pedestal, his hands lowered in dhyana mudra, wearing a long dhoti and billowing shawl, backed by a radiating mandorla and green halo.Provenance: From the Estate of Edith and Joel Frankel, New York, United States. E & J Frankel was a major New York gallery specializing in Asian Art since 1967. Run by Edith (1939-2012) and Joel Frankel (1937-2018), it was one of the oldest galleries in the United States focusing exclusively on Asian art. Leaders in their field, the Frankels traveled the world in search of Asian art treasures and educated the general public about their shared passion. Their gallery on Madison Avenue in New York City became a local institution, best known for its regular schedule of innovative thematic exhibitions, and frequently visited by the biggest names in the field, such as Eskenazi, Ellsworth, Junkunc, and the Alsdorfs.Condition: Good condition with expected wear, light soiling, minor creasing, small losses to pigments, little fraying at the edges, possibly minor touchups. The cloth and silk mounting with traces of wear, age, usage, and minor condition issues, but overall well-preserved.Dimensions: Image size 37.1 x 26.8 cm, Size incl. frame 73.7 x 43.9 cmMounted as a hanging scroll with a silk frame. The present painting eloquently conveys the cultural and religious interchange between Tibetan Buddhism and the Chinese intellectual tradition rooted in Daoism, presenting an exceptional conjunction of motifs drawn from both spheres. Executed in a distinctly Tibetan pictorial style, the composition prominently depicts the Daoist God of Longevity, Shoulao, readily identifiable by his pronounced cranial form, accompanied by the peaches of immortality that ripen beside him, as well as by the deer and the crane, established emblems of longevity within the Chinese symbolic repertoire. These elements are deliberately juxtaposed with Amitayus, the embodiment of longevity associated with Amitabha in Tibetan Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. The conjunction of these figures, each grounded in a distinct doctrinal and iconographic tradition, thus suggests a conscious intent to intensify the auspicious import of the composition, amplifying its message of vitality and transcendence.Auction result comparison:Type: Related Auction: Christie's New York, 28 March 2024, lot 47 Price: USD 8,820 or approx.
