拍品描述
A RARE AND IMPORTANT GRAY SCHIST PANEL OF BUDDHA PERFORMING SELF-MULTIPLICATION, ANCIENT REGION OF GANDHARA, 2ND-3RD CENTURYKushan period. The panel is finely carved in relief, featuring Buddha seated in meditation at the center, draped in a heavy, pleated robe that falls naturally over his form. His hair is styled in wavy locks, framed by a nimbus. Flanking the central figure are five Buddhas, each standing on lotus bases and emanating from him, with two kneeling adorant figures beside his throne, their hands raised in reverence. The scene is supported by a base adorned with five niches, each housing a lion, with vines growing and producing leaves and fruits.Provenance: Collection of Yvette Starck, Luxembourg, acquired in 1975, and thence by descent to Jacques Grosbusch, Luxembourg. Condition: Good condition with expected wear, obvious losses, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, few small fissures, small chips, nicks, and scratches.Weight: 42.2 kg Dimensions: Height 51 x 50.5 cmMounted to a modern stand (2)This panel's rare subject matter, depicting other Buddhas emanating from a principal Buddha, is closely related to a group of Gandharan sculptures that have sparked scholarly debate. A key example is the famous Muhammad Nari Stele, which features a similar emanating scene (Luczanits, The Buddhist Heritage of Pakistan, 2011, p.163, no.68). Scholars, including Harrison and Luczanits, have explored different interpretations of this stele, with some proposing that the emanating Buddhas represent Shakyamuni's Great Miracle at Sravasti, where he multiplied his form in front of critics (see Brown, The Sravasti Miracles in the Art of India and Dvaravati, Archives of Asian Art, 1984, p. 79-95).Other interpretations suggest that the scene depicts either Shakyamuni or Amitabha surrounded by a congregation of Buddhas and bodhisattvas in their celestial realms. Harrison and Luczanits support this view, though they acknowledge challenges in aligning Gandharan art with textual references. They argue that these emanating scenes are among the earliest artistic representations of the expansive worldview of Mahayana Buddhism, expressing the dual nature of Buddhahood: that of the nirmanakaya Buddha active in this world and the exalted Buddha-manifestation beyond. These Gandharan depictions are considered precursors to later representations, such as the famous mural of Amitabha surrounded by bodhisattvas in Sukhavati Heaven at Dunhuang (Luczanits, 2011, p. 68, fig. 4).Literature comparison:Compare a closely related Gandharan gray schist relief depicting the same subject, in the Peshawar Museum, illustrated by Tianshu Zhu, 'In the Thousand-fold World System: A Note on the Images of the Buddha's Multiplication' in Gerd Mevissen (ed.), Vanamālā: Festschrift A. J. Gail, Berlin, 2006. Compare a related Gandharan gray schist panel depicting the Miracle at Sravasti, dated circa 2nd century AD, 40.5 x 40 cm, in the Indian Museum, Kolkata, and included in their seminal traveling exhibition Indian Buddhist Art. Compare a related smaller Gandharan gray schist frieze of Buddha Shakyamuni, 2nd-3rd century, 38.3 x 27.5 cm, in the Museu Etnològic i de Cultures del Món, Barcelona, object number MEB CF 3859.Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Christie's New York, 21 March 2008, lot 562Price: USD 29,800 or approx.
