A GRAY SCHIST NARRATIVE PANEL DEPICTING TWO SCENES FROM THE ASSAULT OF MARA, ANCIENT REGION OF GANDHARAKushan period, 2nd-3rd century AD. Finely and deeply carved to depict Siddhartha Gautama at the seminal moment of his attainment of enlightenment, seated in profound meditation upon a throne, with a subdued female figure prostrate at his feet. The right hand of the Buddha upon his knee, his body enveloped in voluminous drapery that flows elegantly across the chest and between the legs. His hair arranged in wavy locks over the ushnisha. To his left, the malevolent Mara advances with sword poised in the right hand, accompanied by an array of attendant warriors and demons, all striving to impede the attainment of Buddhahood by Shakyamuni.Provenance: A private collection in Paris, France. Private collection of Leonardo Vigorelli, Bergamo, Italy, acquired from the above. Leonardo Vigorelli, a retired Italian art dealer and renowned collector, once specialized in African and ancient Hindu-Buddhist art. With a background in anthropology and decades of travel and field research across India, the Himalayas, Southeast Asia, and Africa, he founded the prestigious Dalton Somaré art gallery in Milan, now managed by his two sons.Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Expected wear, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, obvious losses, old chips, nicks, scratches.Weight: 11.9 kg (incl. stand)Dimensions: Length 25.8 cm (excl. stand), 35.8 cm (incl. stand)Mounted on a bespoke hardwood panel, affixed on a modern metal stand. (2)The lower external walls of stupas in ancient Gandhara were adorned with a profusion of high-relief narrative panels, such as the present example, which depicted major episodes and extraordinary events from the lives of both past and present Buddhas. Alongside images of Shakyamuni placed in niches, these high-relief compositions formed a sacred circuit for circumambulation, through which devotees could accrue spiritual merit by paying homage at the site where relics of the Awakened One were enshrined and by internalizing the stories and teachings of the Buddha conveyed through these images. The present panel represents a crucial episode from the life of Siddhartha on the path to Enlightenment. Mara, a malignant spirit associated with the veils and distractions of worldly existence, feared losing power if Siddhartha attained supreme knowledge and guided others to salvation. Immediately before his Enlightenment, beneath the Bodhi tree, Mara tempted the bodhisattva with worldly pleasures, sovereignty, and immortality. When neither power nor feminine seduction succeeded, sought to engage him in combat, unleashing an army of warriors and demons. Siddhartha called upon the earth goddess by touching the ground, forcing Mara and his host to retreat.Expert's note:The present panel represents this crucial episode in two successive moments. On the right, Mara is depicted with the right hand on the hilt of a sword, poised for assault, surrounded by soldiers, while his son, attempting to dissuade him from attacking Shakyamuni, peers over his right shoulder. On the left, despite considerable erosion of the relief, Mara remains discernible in defeat, with an empty sheath hanging at the waist and the sword blade bent, signifying the triumph of Siddhartha over worldly illusions and sense-perceptions, and his liberation from the cycle of rebirth.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related gray schist relief panel depicting the same subject, dated 2nd-3rd century, 28.5 cm long, in the British Museum, registration number 1895,1018.2.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's New York, 25 March 2004, lot 22 Price: USD 3,585 or approx.
