拍品描述
A LARGE AND FINELY ENGRAVED SILVER 'BIRDS AND FLOWERS' VASE, IRAN, FIRST HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURYThe body supported on a splayed, stepped foot, with high, rounded shoulders rising to a waisted neck with an octagonal mouth. The surface finely chased and embossed in varying degrees of relief to depict an encircling array of blossoming flowerheads, some enclosing stylized animal heads, all framed by luxuriant foliage, interspersed with a dense and intricate profusion of birds and floral motifs set against a minutely ring-punched ground. The composition framed above and below by raised lobed bands of stylized petals, the upper band incised with additional foliate designs, while the rim of the vessel is finely decorated with further flowerheads in high relief. The base of the vase stamped with the mark '84' and impressed with two maker's marks in Persian script.Provenance: From a private collection in Zurich, Switzerland.Condition: Very good condition with some wear, traces of use, expected casting irregularities, minor tarnish, light warping, few small dents, shallow surface scratches.Net silver value: The value of 1,377 grams of .875 fine silver at the time of writing was approx. EUR 2,700. Weight: 1,377 gDimensions: Height 34.2 cmSilverware assumed a prominent role within the furnishings of affluent households under the Pahlavi dynasty (1925-1979), the last royal dynasty of Iran. Elaborately decorated candlesticks and large vases were displayed in reception rooms, where they could be admired and appreciated by both owners and guests. Finely crafted tea services, often richly ornamented, played a central part in the rituals of hospitality extended to frequent visitors.A distinctive characteristic of twentieth-century Iranian silver vessels is the resourcefulness and density of their surface decoration. Typically arranged in symmetrical compositions, their designs incorporate floral and geometric motifs, architectural elements, and animal figures, demonstrating both technical virtuosity and aesthetic refinement. The standard mark found on objects of this type is '84'. This Russian hallmark was widely adopted by Iranian silversmiths during the first half of the twentieth century. Referring to an obsolete Russian unit of weight, 84 zolotnik indicates a silver fineness of 875 parts per thousand. Higher-quality examples are often additionally stamped with the marks of the silversmiths responsible for their production, as evidenced by the two Arabic-character marks impressed on the base of this vessel.Literature comparison:Compare a pair of closely related smaller silver vases of similar form, dated about 1940-1947, 11.5 cm high, from the collection of Fouad and Nadia Kronfol and now in the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, inventory number 2014.315.1-2.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby's London, 6 April 2011, lot 164 Price: GBP 6,875 or approx.
