拍品描述
A BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA, KANDYAN PERIOD (1590-1815), SRI LANKA, 18TH CENTURYFinely cast standing in samabhanga on a waisted and tiered base incised with lotus petals, the right hand raised in abhaya mudra and the left extended alongside the body. The robe drapes over one shoulder in softly undulating folds, secured by a plain sash. The squat, rounded face with a composed expression, downcast eyes, full lips forming a restrained smile, and a pronounced chin, flanked by long pendulous earlobes. The hair is arranged in flat curls rising to a gently domed ushnisha, surmounted by a siraspata.Provenance: Dutch trade. Acquired at a local estate sale in Amsterdam, Netherlands.Condition: Very good condition with some wear and expected casting flaws. Small nicks, light scratches, few dings, surface corrosion, and encrustations. The bronze with a naturally grown patina with scattered malachite encrustations.Weight: 1,561.6 gDimensions: Height 32 cmThe Kingdom of Kandy (1590-1815) emerged as the pre-eminent Sinhalese political authority and patron of Buddhism by the seventeenth century. Two principal forces shaped the style of Kandyan Buddhist art. The first is the continuation of Sinhalese sculptural traditions depicting the Buddha with a broad body wrapped in a pleated robe, established by the colossal statues of the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa periods, such as the Avukana Buddha and the sculptures of Gal Vihara. The second derives from South Indian traditions of expressing dynastic identity through the artistic patronage of religious objects, a practice enthusiastically embraced by the Nayak princes who were invited to assume the Kandyan throne after the last Sinhalese king died without an heir in 1747.Represented by the present sculpture, the Kandyan style plays with abstraction in an almost modern way. The curved contour of the figure's right side contrasts with the straight edge of its left, and the surface is finished with panache using formalized waves to convey the wrinkling of fine gossamer under Sri Lanka's tropical humidity.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Bonhams New York, 13 March 2017, lot 3112 Price: USD 17,500 or approx.
