拍品描述
Expert's note: In Buddhist contexts, images damaged by temple fires - such as the present lot - were not necessarily discarded. Rather, such events were often accepted as part of the natural cycle of existence, reflecting the Buddhist understanding of impermanence and the unfolding of karmic circumstances. Monks and craftsmen sometimes chose to preserve rather than conceal these traces of damage, carefully stabilizing the affected areas and occasionally smoothing or even re-incising melted surfaces to maintain the integrity of the image. In doing so, the physical marks of the event could become part of the statue's devotional history, transforming adversity into a renewed expression of spiritual reverence.Sumatra. Finely cast and exquisitely modeled, standing in samabhanga, his left hand raised and clasped around the handle of a bell, and the lowered right clutching a lotus bud, clad in a diaphanous uttarasanga which covers the left shoulder and crosses the chest diagonally, but leaves the right shoulder and right arm bare, flaring downward in a gently undulating hemline that hangs from the forearm and reveals the slender outlines of the body. The gently rounded face with a serene expression, distinguished by heavy-lidded eyes below arched brows, centered by a raised urna, an aquiline nose, and pursed lips forming a calm smile, all flanked by elongated earlobes. The hair arranged in tight curls over the domed ushnisha and backed by a large circular nimbus cast with a mythical beast to the back.Provenance: An old private collection in Bali, Indonesia, by 1980. In 2021 by descent to the present owner.Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age.
