A LARGE BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA, KANDYAN PERIOD (c. 1590-1815), SRI LANKA, 18THCENTURYExpert's note: Sri Lanka maintains the longest continuous tradition of Buddhism in the world, and this is evident in the evolution of the representation of the Buddha forms created on the island. Sri Lankan Buddha statues are distinguished by their elegance and air of benign authority. Instead of an ushnisha, the more familiar cranial flaming protuberance is characteristic of Sri Lankan images of the Buddha. The present lot is further contrasted from its contemporary counterparts in the modeling of its elegant, elongated face, which is distinct from the common squat, almost rounded square examples dated later in the same period.Finely cast standing in samabhanga on a waisted double-lotus base incised with lotus petals, the recessed bands further decorated with incised flower heads. The right hand is raised in vitarka mudra and the left extended alongside the body. The robe is draped over one shoulder with gently undulating folds and secured by a plain sash. The rounded oval face bears a serene expression, marked by downcast eyes, full lips pursed into a subtle smile, and a prominent chin, flanked by long pendulous earlobes. The hair is arranged in flat coiled curls rising to a siraspata.Provenance: From the private collection of Russell M. Leiman, Durham, USA, and thence by descent. Russell M. At age 50, Russell decided it was time to leave the glitter and material superficiality of the financial world and use his investment expertise to leverage funds raised to support environmental conservation. Condition: Very good condition with old wear and typical casting flaws. Small nicks, light scratches, few dings, surface corrosion, and encrustations. Minor fatigue cracks and losses, some with old fills. The bronze with a naturally grown patina with areas of malachite encrustations.Weight: 3,851 gDimensions: Height 46.5The Kingdom of Kandy (1590-1815) emerged as the pre-eminent Sinhalese political authority and patron of Buddhism by the seventeenth century. Two principal forces shaped the style of Kandyan Buddhist art. The first is the continuation of Sinhalese sculptural traditions depicting the Buddha with a broad body wrapped in a pleated robe, established by the colossal statues of the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa periods, such as the Avukana Buddha and the sculptures of Gal Vihara. The second derives from South Indian traditions of expressing dynastic identity through the artistic patronage of religious objects, a practice enthusiastically embraced by the Nayak princes who were invited to assume the Kandyan throne after the last Sinhalese king died without an heir in 1747.Represented by the present sculpture, the Kandyan style plays with abstraction in an almost modern way. The curved contour of the figure's right side contrasts with the straight edge of its left, and the surface is finished with panache using formalized waves to convey the wrinkling of fine gossamer under Sri Lanka's tropical humidity.Auction result comparison: Type: Near identicalAuction: Bonhams Hong Kong, 29 March 2018, lot 32Mid-estimate: HKD 250,000 or approx.
