A VERY FINE PAINTING WITH A MONUMENTAL PALACE SCENE, RATTANAKOSIN KINGDOM (1782-1932)Thailand, 19th century. Ink, watercolors, and gouache on paper. Mounted as a hanging scroll.Finely painted to depict the interior of a resplendent pavilion with a heavily adorned royal couple flanked by attendants. A group of civilians waits outside by the stairs, mostly dressed in green with blue brocade pants, another group right before the palatial gate, two carrying umbrellas while they observe an old man and two figures carrying water. Outside, a house on stilts, a teacher taking a class, his eager disciples engaged in dialogue, still others tending to a horse. Marching soldiers approach the scene, a patient tiger awaiting their arrival from within the confines of his cave.Provenance: French trade. Acquired from a private estate in Paris, France. Condition: Very good condition with some wear, slight fading to colors, little soiling, creasing, flaking to pigment, and small areas with touchups. Dimensions: Size 316 x 90.5 cmThe highly acclaimed HBO drama The White Lotus incorporated Thai murals into the opening sequence of its third season, which are closely related to the present lot. Some depict temples, others variously illustrate an idyllic lake, a picturesque cliffside, a forest populated by wild animals, and a ship caught in a storm—all bearing hallmarks of Thai art traditions such as flat perspective, large scale, and earthy colors. Close-ups of these scenes bring out intricate brushwork and weathered surfaces, while homing in on figures from monkeys and elephants to warriors and coquettish women. The segment emerged from the team's deep immersion into Southeast Asian art, fueled by a visit to Bangkok where they absorbed Thai history and architecture. The style and technique of the present painting relate closely to the mural painting tradition of the Rattanakosin era, which itself developed from earlier Ayutthaya precedents. The color palette, the use of gold, the linear rendering of figures, palace architecture, and decorative motifs, as well as the expression of space through an isometric perspective, all reflect this tradition. For a discussion of Thai mural painting and its stylistic development, see Elizabeth Lyons, “Thai Traditional Painting”, Thai Culture, New Series, No. 20, 1990.During the Rattanakosin period, the Thai monarchy played a crucial role in the patronage and development of large-scale religious and narrative paintings. While murals formed the most visible expression of this tradition in temple interiors, related compositions were also produced on cloth and paper as portable works. These paintings drew on the same visual language developed in temple decoration.Under the early Chakri kings, particularly King Rama I (1782-1809), extensive mural programs were commissioned in major temples such as Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Pho, illustrating the Ramakien (Thailand's version of the Ramayana), Buddhist cosmology, and Jataka tales. During the reign of King Rama II (1809-1824), mural painting techniques became more refined. A major patron of Buddhist art, he supported extensive decorative programs in temples including Wat Arun and Wat Ratchanatdaram, where traditional Thai styles were occasionally blended with Chinese elements. The interiors of temples such as Wat Pho and Wat Arun display elaborate cycles of Buddhist iconography, celestial beings, scenes from the Ramakien, and traditional Thai cosmology, sometimes also incorporating depictions of medicinal knowledge and aspects of daily life.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related Cambodian painting depicting Revolt of a Prince, dated c. 1890, 180 x 70 cm, in the Walters Art Museum, accession number 2010.12.15.Auction result comparison: Type: RelatedAuction: Christie's New York, 21 March 2015, lot 1269Price: USD 7,500 or approx.
