The deep bowl rising from a flattened base to gently curving sides, finely embossed and chased with a wide band of lobed cartouches enclosing thepphanom in meditation, alternating with blossoming lotus buds, all below a floral border lined with studs. The base with a central medallion depicting a stylized blossom.Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe. In December 2025, he was awarded medals of national recognition by the Royal Government of Cambodia for his exceptional contributions to the scientific study, preservation, and international understanding of Angkor and Koh Ker. Zelnik founded the Hungarian Southeast Asian Institute in the early 2000s. The Institute supported a range of research programs at Angkor and Koh Ker, including archaeological surveys, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) investigations, epigraphic studies, and historical research. These efforts have contributed to a deeper understanding of the Angkorian empire, the pre-Angkor period, and Cambodia's prehistoric times. Research supported by the institute played a key role in raising international awareness of Koh Ker and led to its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Condition: Very good condition with some wear, traces of use, light scratches, few dents, and tiny nicks. The base with a minor old metal fill, possibly inherent to the manufacture.Weight: 364 g Dimensions: Diameter 21.7 cmThepphanom denotes a celestial being or devata depicted performing the anjali mudra, the gesture of reverence, in traditional painting and sculptural programs. In Thai and broader Southeast Asian religious iconography, the figure functions as a protective deity and guardian of sacred space. Thepphanom figures are frequently represented in pairs, sometimes conceived as male and female counterparts, kneeling on both knees in attitudes of prayer or veneration. According to tradition, such celestial attendants first descended to earth at the moment of the Buddha's enlightenment, thereafter serving as protectors of the Buddha and, by extension, as guardians of temples and sacred objects, including scriptures and ritual implements.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related Thai repoussé silver bowl, dated 19th-early 20th century, 20.7 cm diameter, at Michael Backman, London, inventory number 3264.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Bonhams New York, 18 September 2013, lot 231 Price: USD 3,625 or approx.
