拍品描述
Thailand, 1782-1851. Finely cast, the muscular torso of Buddha is dressed in an ornate embroidered robe that leaves the right arm and shoulder bare. The garment is finely cast with diapered floral designs and embellished in 'gesso' with floral roundels (pha lai), conveying a lavishly embroidered cloth. The left arm in dhyanamudra, the slender and elongated fingers elegantly modeled and curved. His serene face with heavy-lidded eyes below gently arched brows and full lips forming a calm smile, flanked by long pendulous earlobes, the hair arranged in tight curls over the domed ushnisha.Provenance: Collection of Dr. Helmut Ploog, Munich, Germany, assembled since 1965, and thence by descent. Dr. Helmut Ploog (1940-2024) was among the most influential and respected graphologists in the German-speaking world. Over the course of a distinguished career as an expert witness, educator, and author, he published a series of seminal works that are now regarded as standard references in the study of handwriting and character analysis. Beyond his professional achievements, Ploog cultivated a deep commitment to the arts. He assembled a notable collection of Asian art, including significant Chinese and Thai works. He donated part of his collection, among them several important Khmer sculptures, to the Weltmuseum in Vienna.Condition: Good condition with wear and casting irregularities. Obvious losses, flaking to gilt, scattered nicks and scratches, small dings, encrustations, and surface corrosion. The bronze with a naturally grown patina with areas of malachite encrustations. Weight: 7,069 g (incl. stand) Dimensions: Height 31.5 cm (excl. stand), 54 cm (incl. stand)Mounted on an associated stand. (2) Buddha images wearing such patterned robes, a symbol of royalty, were introduced during the reign of King Rama III (reigned 1824-1851), and disappeared thereafter. It is thus most likely that this majestic sculpture was one such royal commission produced under King Rama III's reign.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Bonhams New York, 23 July 2020, lot 841 Price: USD 22,575 or approx.
