Of compressed globular form, supported on a tapered ring foot and rising to an everted rim, flanked by two C-shaped handles issuing from the mouths of mythical beasts in gilt bronze. The rim is adorned with a band of trefoil lappets, and the foot with a band of upright leaves.Provenance: Ben Janssens Oriental Art, London, United Kingdom, by 2006. The collection of Gert Mosler, Amsterdam, Netherlands, acquired from the above at TEFAF 2006 in Maastricht, Belgium, and thence by descent in the family. A copy of the invoice issued and signed by Ben Janssens, dated to 22 March 2006, confirming the dating above, and stating a purchase price for the present lot of EUR 6,500 or approx. EUR 10,000 (adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies this lot. Gert Mosler was born into a prominent German-Jewish banking family. His grandfather Georg owned the modernist Villa Mosler in Neubabelsberg, designed in 1925-26 by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The family fled Germany in 1933 following the Nazi rise to power, and their property was subsequently expropriated. Raised in the Netherlands, Mosler studied law at Leiden University and was admitted to the Amsterdam bar in 1956. He built a distinguished legal career, later serving as of counsel at the Amsterdam firm Stibbe, specializing in corporate and financial law. Alongside his professional work, he formed a private collection of Chinese works of art and was active in Dutch civic life, serving as chairman of the Amsterdam Old Course golf club in the 1990s. Condition: Very good condition with expected wear, traces of use, manufacturing irregularities including pitting, minimal losses to gilt, few minute nicks, minor rubbing to gilt.Weight: 475 g Dimensions: Width 14 cm (across handles)The present censer, conceived for burning fragrant incense, is made after ancient Chinese ceremonial bronze vessels known as gui, which were made during the Shang and Zhou dynasties for sacrificial purposes to the ancestors. During the Ming and Qing dynasty, secular incense burners inspired by ritual bronzes emerged from the antiquarian pursuits of the intellectual elite. Such burners were typically placed on stands or small tables reserved for their use. The delicate fragrances produced from rare, imported, and often costly aromatic woods were highly valued among China's elite. Together with incense and the tongs used to handle it, the censer became an essential element of the scholar's study. While incense was employed ceremonially across all levels of Chinese society, the literati cultivated a refined connoisseurship of its use, integrating it into the rhythms of daily life.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Bonhams New York, 19 March 2018, lot 8159 Price: USD 21,250 or approx.
