拍品描述
A SMALL GILT-BRONZE CLOISONNé ENAMEL 'ELEPHANT' CENSER, QIANLONG PERIODChina, 1736-1795. The body is decorated with scrolling lotus reserved against a turquoise ground, raised on three gilt-bronze elephant-head supports and fitted with matching handles formed as elephant heads with elegantly curled trunks. The reticulated gilt-metal cover is cast with four bats amid stylized clouds and surmounted by a recumbent elephant finial, completing the auspicious ensemble.Provenance: Collection of Michael and Ingrid Kelly, Fredericksburg, Virginia, United States. Michael and Ingrid Kelly were the proprietors of Worldwide Gallery Antiques, a firm specializing in Asian works of art dating from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. Over more than sixty-five years in the trade, they assembled a collection focused on Chinese and Japanese art, notably twentieth-century Japanese woodblock prints, alongside select Belle époque decorative objects.Condition: Very good condition with expected old wear, manufacturing irregularities including pitting and few corresponding minuscule fills, fine craquelure to enamels, rubbing and minor losses to gilt, few tiny nicks, minute losses below the upper rim.Weight: 248 g Dimensions: Length 8.8 cm, Height 8.6 cmThe tradition of using three elephant heads as the feet of imperial bronze censers and braziers at the Beijing Palace can be traced back at least as far as the Xuande reign. This type of censer is loosely based on the shape of archaic ritual vessels of the Shang and Zhou dynasties. Although the overall outlines of the archaic models were retained, the imperial craftsmen liberally interpreted original decorative motifs incorporating them with Ming and Qing inspired designs. The present example is particularly remarkable for the consistent use of the elephant motif, which appears in the form of three feet, two handles, and a neatly cast and incised finial gracing the cover.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby's New York, 19 March 2013, lot 331 Mid-Estimate: USD 13,500 or approx.
