(2)Provenance: Property from a Private Collection, South Africa. Christie's South Kensington, 19 June 1997, lot 251. The private collection of Jules Speelman, London, acquired from the above. Christie's Paris, 11 December 2024, lot 31, mid-estimate EUR 10,000.Jules Speelman is a world-leading dealer and collector of East Asian art with 60 years of experience. In 1964 he joined his late father, Alfred, in the family business which already stretched back three generations to 19th century Holland and expanded into England around the turn of the century. Originally, A & J Speelman dealt with antiques, from European ceramics, silver, tapestries, and furniture to Chinese porcelain, and works of art. With his father, Jules gradually shifted the focus towards Asia and under Jules Speelman's skilled direction, A & J Speelman is now considered amongst the foremost dealers in Asian antiques, with a particular emphasis on figurative sculpture and works of art from the past 2000 years. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, manufacturing irregularities including little pitting, light surface scratches, few tiny nicks and minuscule dents, few tiny losses to enamels.Weight: 843 g and 839 g Dimensions: Height 17.2 cm and 17.3 cmPacks of hounds bred for foxhunting and coursing had been maintained in England since at least the early seventeenth century, and English hunting dogs were widely renowned throughout Europe. With the expansion of trade by the English East India companies into the Far East, such hounds became valued export commodities, through which the concept and imagery of European hunting dogs were also introduced to China and other East Asian countries.Expert's note:Cloisonné enamel figures in form of hounds are far rarer than their porcelain counterparts. Compare similar porcelain models dating to the eighteenth century, such as a pair of blanc de chine dogs of similar size (16 cm) in the British Museum, registration number 1980,0728.121-122; and a larger polychrome-enameled hound, 60 cm high, at Christie's New York, 21 January 2016, lot 50, sold for USD 50,000.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's London, 5 April 2000, lot 133 Price: GBP 14,100 or approx.
