Finely decorated in bright enamels with a wide lotus scroll and an archaistic dragon band in blue, all set on a turquoise ground. The zhadou has a separately cast gilt-bronze insert and is decorated on the base with a large chrysanthemum bloom centered by a yin-yang medallion. The cover is surmounted by a gilt-bronze knop finial, the interior is also gilt, and the fitting securing the knop is original to the piece.Provenance: From a private collection in southern Germany. Condition: Good condition with expected wear, traces of use, and manufacturing irregularities including the usual pitting with minute old fills, tiny nicks, and light surface scratches to the interior, as well as little rubbing and minimal losses to the gilt. A small old repair to the rim. The separately cast gilt-bronze insert with extensive traces of use.Weight: 1,578 g (total) Dimensions: Height 8.2 cm (incl. cover), Diameter 12.6 cmExpert's note: The zhadou is a scholar's object specifically associated with the Qianlong period and produced for the imperial court in a variety of refined materials, including lacquer, glass, enamel, and porcelain. A cinnabar lacquer zhadou is currently exhibited in the Sanxitang (Three Treasures Hall), which was a private study of the Qianlong Emperor. It was so named because it was used to house his favorite three pieces of calligraphy, 'Timely Clearing after Snowfall' by Wang Xizhi, 'Mid-Autumn' by Wang Xianzhi, and 'A Letter to Boyuan' by Wang Xun.
