A 'TIGER' WOOL RUG, BAOTU, CHINA, LATE QING DYNASTY, 19TH - EARLY 20TH CENTURYExpert's note: So-called baotu rugs (literally “leopard design” rugs) are a distinctive group of Chinese carpets woven primarily in northern China during the Qing dynasty. Despite the name, the animal depicted is frequently rendered as a tiger rather than a leopard, reflecting the fluid use of the term bao in decorative contexts. These rugs typically present a single large feline shown crouching, stalking, or preparing to leap within a sparse landscape setting of rocks, grasses, or a tree. The animals are highly stylized, often characterized by bulging eyes, exaggerated whiskers, and animated facial expressions, features that lend the compositions a strikingly lively appearance. In Chinese tradition the tiger is regarded as a powerful guardian capable of warding off evil influences, and representations of the animal were therefore favored in domestic and official interiors. Rugs of this type were commonly used on platforms, benches, or chairs rather than as large floor coverings. The present example reflects this established tradition, combining bold imagery with a relatively simple landscape backdrop typical of Qing-period animal carpets.Finely woven with a tiger crouching low in a rocky meadow, one paw raised as if preparing to leap forward, its tail lifted and curling through the air beneath the shade of a large tree with stylized foliage, all set against a midnight-blue sky. The beast is rendered with a strikingly animated expression, with long whiskers, wide bulging eyes beneath furrowed brows, and a broad grin, the alert ears picked out in pink. Its characteristic pelt is depicted in a vibrant orange tone with dark stripes and an articulated dotted spine.Provenance: From a private estate in Carrollton, Texas, USA.
