拍品描述
A 'STALKING TIGER' WOOL RUG, HIMALAYAN REGION, LATE 19TH TO EARLY 20TH CENTURYFinely woven with a tiger menacingly crouching low, its tail raised and waving in the air, under the shade of a pine tree and next to gnarled rockwork, all under the midnight blue sky. The beast with a comically fierce expression, bulging eyes, a wide grin and alert ears picked out in red. Its characteristic pelt is rendered in an ombre orange hue with dark stripes and an articulated dotted spine.Provenance: Collection of Dr. Helmut Ploog, Munich, Germany, assembled since 1965, and thence by descent. Dr. Helmut Ploog (1940-2024) was among the most influential and respected graphologists in the German-speaking world. Over the course of a distinguished career as an expert witness, educator, and author, he published a series of seminal works that are now regarded as standard references in the study of handwriting and character analysis. Beyond his professional achievements, Ploog cultivated a deep commitment to the arts. He assembled a notable collection of Asian art, including significant Chinese and Thai works. He donated part of his collection, among them several important Khmer sculptures, to the Weltmuseum in Vienna.Condition: Very good condition with some wear, weaving irregularities, traces of use, soiling, minor fading, tiny losses. A small square patch to the top-right corner repaired.Dimensions: Size 143 x 85 cmTigers, as symbols of courage and power, their representations on rugs were often displayed in imperial courts as emblems of authority, symbolic of ruler's dominance over man and nature. Tiger images were often incorporated in Chinese elite households owing to their ability of warding off evil spirits. In Tibet, tigers were auspicious animals in Tibetan Buddhism, symbolizing fearlessness and protection. Depicted alongside Buddhist deities, the tiger motifs were believed to protect the monks in the monasteries.Auction result comparison: Type: RelatedAuction: Dorotheum Vienna, 12 April 2022, lot 108Price: EUR 15,360 or approx.
