拍品描述
China. Finely woven to depict a carp leaping amid churning waves, its mouth agape from which issues a dense cloud of vapor. Emerging from the swirling mist in the upper right is a writhing dragon beside the crest of an ornate gate. The vaporous clouds and the textured surface of the creatures are rendered with meticulous detail.Provenance: From the private collection of Johan Almqvist, Sweden and Japan, and thence by descent in the family. Johan Almqvist (1940-2024) was a journalist and collector born into a family that encouraged his early interest in art and languages. His father, Karl Fredrik Almqvist (1906-1982), a Swedish diplomat, brought the family to postings in several countries, exposing Johan to different cultures from an early age. In the early 1960s, while working as a freelance journalist in the Middle East, he developed a lasting interest in Persian ceramics and began collecting. This passion continued as he later settled in Japan, from where he worked as a freelance correspondent for Scandinavian media, including Swedish Television and Svensk Radio. His reporting took him across much of Asia, including the Philippines, Korea, and Vietnam.Condition: Good condition with old wear, weaving irregularities, traces of use, minor soiling, some fading, and loose threads. Four small areas with old reinforcing patches.Dimensions: 179 × 90.2 cmAccording to Chinese legend, carp swimming upstream in the Yellow River must leap the rapids known as the Dragon Gate. The first to succeed is transformed into a dragon. This story became a well-known metaphor for a scholar who passes the imperial civil service examinations and rises to high office. The dragon-carp motif therefore expresses a wish for success, advancement, and achievement.
