拍品描述
Expert's note:The Chinese describe the cool, blue-tinged white glaze of this beaker as moon white, a term Western collectors later rendered in French as clair de lune. Its elegant trumpet mouth and gently swelling midsection consciously echo the ancient bronze gu vessels used as early as the Shang dynasty. By adopting this archaic silhouette, the potter aligns the piece with China's longstanding antiquarian tradition. The restrained, pale glaze further reinforces this dialogue with the past. Its subtle tonal depth recalls the refined monochrome wares that reached particular sophistication during the Song dynasty, when quiet surface nuance was valued above overt ornament.China, 1662-1735. The vessel finely potted on a splayed foot rising to a bulging mid-section decorated on either end with a band of raised dots, incised below and above with fine lines, and surmounted by a wide trumpet neck, covered inside and out in a pale blue clair-de-lune glaze. The recessed base with a finely painted underglaze-blue artemesia leaf mark enclosed within a double circle. Provenance: Collection of Emil Zuckerkandl, Vienna, Austria, thence by descent to his wife Berta Zuckerkandl-Szeps, and thence by further descent in the family. Berta Zuckerkandl-Szeps (1864-1945) was an Austrian Jewish writer, journalist, critic, and prominent salon host. The daughter of newspaper publisher Moritz Szeps, she married Emil Zuckerkandl in 1886, a university professor and noted collector who shared her passion for art. While Emil had begun collecting East Asian art even before he met Berta, it is believed that he was introduced to modern art movements by his wife. From the late 19th century until 1938, she hosted an influential salon frequented by leading figures of Austria's artistic and intellectual life, among them Gustav Klimt, Arthur Schnitzler, Max Reinhardt, and Alma Mahler. Closely associated with the Vienna Secession and the Wiener Werkst?tte, she actively supported both movements through her writing as well as commissions and purchases. During World War II, she fled the Nazi Regime together with her son in 1938, working for an Allied radio station in Algiers broadcasting calls for the Austrian resistance, before she died in exile in Paris in 1945.Condition: Excellent condition with minor only minor old wear and minimal firing irregularities.Weight: 221 g Dimensions: Height 16.6 cmLiterature comparison:Compare a closely related clair de lune glazed beaker-shaped vase, with a Kangxi mark and of the period, 18.7 cm high, in the National Museum of Asian Art, Smithsonian Institution, accession number F1991.13.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Sotheby's London, 11 May 2022, lot 6Price: GBP 27,720 or approx.
