Vaughan (1908-1979) was an American lawyer and businessman who made a mark as CEO and Chairman of Freeport Minerals Company (now Freeport-McMoRan) and developed a decades-long passion for Chinese porcelain. His erudite collection, which was kept in the family after his passing over two generations, included three imperial Yongzheng yuzhi-marked falangcai pieces.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities including little pitting and few dark spots. Expected rubbing to the gilt and minor surface abrasion. The base drilled with associated small shallow chips.Weight: 2.8 kg Dimensions: Height 44.9 cmExpert's note: The present vase was recently discussed in an online forum for collectors of Chinese porcelain and works of art. While participants mostly agreed that the vase dates no later than the 18th century, one group was convinced it was a genuine Kangxi piece while another suggested it may date from the Yongzheng or Qianlong reigns. A link to this forum will be provided upon request.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related vase with romantic scenes, dated to the early 18th century, 43.2 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 14.40.239.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's New York, 17 March 2017, lot 1258Price: USD 21,250 or approx.
