拍品描述
X-Rays: Conventional X-rays conducted in 2026 allowed us to detect a neatly incised seal mark on the base. Two characters became fully legible, reading Xin and Zhai. The mark is not visible to the naked eye, as it has been almost entirely obscured by the robin's egg glaze. The X-ray examination was therefore essential in confirming its presence and documenting the inscription. The seal most likely represents a mid-Qing artist's or studio mark.China. The square body of the faceted teapot tapers gently to the mouth rim, and has a loop handle on one side and a small, curved spout on the other. The square, domed cover is surmounted by a loop handle and pierced with a small vent hole. The exterior and base are covered with a finely mottled turquoise and blue glaze.Provenance: Collection of Solomon Adler, gifted to his brother in the early 1960s, and thence by direct descent. Solomon Adler (1909-1994) worked as a United States Treasury representative in China from 1941 to 1948, a period during which he assembled a fine collection of Chinese furniture and works of art. during World War II. In 1949, he was identified as a Soviet spy and became the subject of an investigation, but resigned from the Treasury Department before the case was resolved. He returned to Britain, where he taught for several years at Cambridge University. In the early 1960s, he moved to China and passed his entire collection on to his brother. Condition: Good condition with expected wear, traces of use, and manufacturing irregularities including pitting and firing cracks to the interior. The inside of the lid with a visible small repair. Minor glaze flaking and few small chips to the rim.Weight: 988 g (excl. stand), 1,139 g (incl. stand) Dimensions: Height 20.1 cm (excl. stand), 23 cm (incl. stand)With an associated stand. (2)Teapots of this square shape are commonly referred to as hanfanghu and are thought to be an innovation of the Kangxi period potter Hua Fenxiang, who took inspiration from archaic bronze square-shaped vessels known as fangu. Robin's egg glaze, on the other hand, is amongst one of the most distinctive innovations of the Imperial kiln during the 18th century, with some sources linking it to the experiments carried out under the supervision of Tang Yin. The earliest, securely datable examples of vessels bearing this glaze are from the Yongzheng period. Its soft hues of blue are inspired by the elusive glazes of the Jun kilns, the copper splashes of whom are thought to have inspired also the development of flambe glazes. Whilst the main trend for Yixing wares remained for them to be left unglazed, thus showing off the rich colors of the area's native clays, in the 18th century a small number of these started being applied with some special glazes, including robin's egg.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related robin's egg glazed teapot, dated to the 18th century, 22.4 cm high, illustrated in Yixing purple clay wares.
