拍品描述
Northern China or Inner Mongolia, Ordos, c. 6th-2nd century BC. Each finely carved in openwork as a highly stylized stag shown in profile, with its head and antlers subtly rendered, as well as its limbs, through oblong perforations. The smoothly polished, translucent stone of an attractive greenish-white tone with cloudy inclusions. (2)Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and natural age-related imperfections. Few minuscule nicks and faint surface scratches. The stone surface with minimal areas of soil encrustation around the apertures.Weight: 19.2 g (total)Dimensions: Length 4.2 to 4.8 cmStag occupied a pivotal role in the cosmology of the nomadic peoples of Ordos, Inner Mongolia, during the second half of the first millennium BCE. Esteemed as a sacred creature, it embodied power, protection, and a conduit to supernatural forces, concepts of paramount importance in warrior and pastoral societies. Associations with hunting and natural abundance further underscored reliance on the resources of the steppe. Recurrent depiction of the stag, especially on bronze artifacts, served both ritual and prestige functions. Objects of this kind, incorporated into tombs, weaponry, and horse trappings, were intended to safeguard the deceased, affirm collective identity, and signify social standing. Within the so-called 'animal style' of this period, characterized by dynamic and stylized motifs, branching antlers of the stag constituted a particularly distinctive element in the visual lexicon of these cultures.Expert's note: While numerous bronze plaques with animal motifs akin to those of the present lot have been recovered from Ordos tombs in Hebei Province and Inner Mongolia, as illustrated, for instance, in Zhongguo qingtong qi quanji (Complete Collection of Classified Chinese Fine Arts: The Complete Works of Chinese Ritual Bronzes), vol. 15, 1995, pl. 150-153, jade examples remain exceedingly rare.Literature comparison:Compare a related set of four bronze 'stag' plaques, Inner Mongolia, Ordos, 5th-1st century BC, 3.5 cm long (each), in the British Museum, registration number 1947,0712.367.a-b. Compare a related bronze 'stag' belt plaque, Inner Mongolia, Ordos, 3rd-2nd century BC, 12.7 cm long, in the Minneapolis Institute of Art, accession number 96.52.2.2. Compare a related bronze 'animal' belt plaque, 206 BC-220 AD, 6.3 cm long, in the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art, accession number F1913.127.
