拍品描述
A VERY RARE WHITE JADE 'DOUBLE PHOENIX' PENDANT, LATE WARRING STATES PERIOD TO EARLY WESTERN HAN DYNASTYChina, c. 3rd-1st century BC. The flattened plaque, of a slightly curved form, symmetrically carved on both sides with two confronting phoenix heads, marked by prominent eyes and curved beaks. Their bodies joined by finely carved scrollwork in openwork, with subtle incised detailing. The smoothly polished, translucent stone of an icy-white tone, with cloudy inclusions and areas of creamy-white calcification.Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age, with ancient wear and inherent natural imperfections. Distinct traces of weathering and erosion. Minute loss to one upper curl, smoothly worn over time. Occasional minuscule chips and nibbling along the edges. Few minor nicks and shallow surface scratches. The stone surface with small areas of soil encrustation and remnants of ritual red pigment.Weight: 37.6 gDimensions: Length 13.4 cmTowards the end of the Eastern Zhou period until the Han dynasty, the scale and quality of jade production reached an unprecedented level. Many historians and connoisseurs regard it as China's first high point in the art of jade carvings. Works from this period typically possess a combination of intricacy in detail and boldness of design, enabled by technological improvements with bronze implements and tools. Stylistically, designs and compositions often included long sinuous creatures in openwork with ornate surface decoration of linked scrolls.
