(3)Corinthian pottery was exported on a large scale across the Mediterranean during the late eighth and much of the seventh century BC. Scholarly debate continues as to whether the principal value of these vessels resided in their ceramic form or in the commodities they conveyed, particularly in the case of aryballoi, which were used to store valuable aromatic liquids and anointing oils. On the Italian peninsula, and particularly in Etruria, local workshops produced imitations and adaptations of Corinthian prototypes, of which the present example is characteristic.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related Etrusco-Corinthian terracotta pointed aryballos (oil flask), late 7th to early 6th century BC, 10 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 96.9.14. Compare a closely related Etrusco-Corinthian pottery aryballos, first half 6th century BC, 9.2 cm high, in the Musée du Louvre, inventory number 989-2001-138. Compare a closely related Etrusco-Corinthian piriform aryballos, first half 6th century BC, 10 cm high, in the Museo Nazionale di Tuscania, national catalogue number 1200790098.Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Sotheby's New York, lot 25Price: USD 4,200 or approx.
