A MINIATURE PAINTING WITH THE WORSHIP OF A TIRTHANKARA BY ROYAL DEVOTEESIndia, Rajasthan, Jodhpur, 19th century. Opaque pigments and gilt on paper. Finely painted to depict a tirthankara seated in dhyanasana with regal ease on a large square throne, surmounted by a small canopy, his hands resting in dhyana mudra on the lap and draped in a red cloth leaving his richly bejeweled torso exposed. The head, bearing a hieratic expression, characterized by almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose, and full red lips forming a subtle smile, and distinctively crowned and nimbed. The jina flanked by a pair of royal devotees holding fly whisks aloft, while a small animal runs at the foot of the throne, all set against a vivid blue sky. The composition enclosed within a yellow border decorated with small red and green dots connected by black tendrils.Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012. The reverse with a French handwritten inscription from a previous collector.Condition: Good condition with expected wear. Light fading and fine cracking to pigments. A small hole near the upper right edge.Dimensions: 6.2 x 5.1 cm (excl. frame), 15.6 x 14.2 cm (incl. frame)Mounted and framed. (2)At the heart of daily Jain religious observance is the veneration of the image of the Jina, the conceptual basis of which is the pan-Indian ideal of the yogic ascetic. This ancient practice, celebrated in the Vedas, equates the acquisition of spiritual wisdom with the pursuit of advanced forms of meditation and withdrawal from material comforts. In Jainism, the twenty-four liberated souls who are recognized as having attained this elevated state are worshiped as tirthankaras (ford crossers). Literature comparison:Compare a related painting with a scene of the adoration of Jina Ajitanatha, India, Rajasthan, Marwar, c. 1675, 27.9 x 21.6 cm, in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), accession number M.71.1.21. Compare a related Digambara Jain manuscript page with a painting of a jina venerated by a monk and a royal devotee, India, Rajasthan, 18th century, 28.4 x 17.8 cm, in the University of Michigan Museum of Art, accession number 1975/2.167.
